Ruins Market/夾檳榔機
Hualien, Taiwan
August, 2017

In 2017 I partook in a residency in Hualien, Taiwan, that culminated in Ruins Market, a weekend long community arts event that featured local booths and performances. I worked with a local marble sculptor for the weeks leading up, who taught me how to make small replica betel nuts out of marble.

Inspired by the abundance of children’s claw machines in Taiwan, I borrowed one from a local skate shop and put my marble betel nuts inside, making a temporary sculpture called 夾檳榔機 (Betel Nut Claw Machine). The game was playable for 25 NT.
